Playlist for June 20,2013

On this edition of Africamix I featured a retrospective of African pop music. The eighties and nineties were a fertile time for African music. With the advent of new recording technology African artists seized the opportunity to create their own brand of pop music which became known as Afro-pop. The following titles are samples of the era. I also featured Afro beat music.
Fela, the creator of this African music style once said “Music is the weapon for the future” he definitely used his music for social justice for the common people. He denounced the Nigeria government at different period of time for the rampant corruption and human right violations. Since he died, a score of musicians from Africa and from around the world have followed his footsteps to keep afro beat alive.

Music and conversation with French Jazz singer Raquel Bitton
Havana meets Paris

French songstress, producer and renowned interpreter of songs by Edith Piaf has released a new CD “Rhythm of the Heart”. On her latest production, Raquel Bitton sings the classic songs of Tino Rossi, the romantic tenor singer of the French Cabaret era of the 30s. She is accompanied by an incredible cast of Latin musicians in the bay area. Raquel was born in Marrakesh, Morocco; she has been hailed as one of the foremost interpreters of French jazz music in America today. Raquel has performed her hit show “Raquel Bitton sings, Edith Piaf, Her story… Her Songs” to sold out performances at Carnegie Hall and many other célèbre venues. As a resident of San Francisco bay area, we are proud to have her in our music community. She was my guest on Africamix Thursday April 4.
