Nado presents

Join me this Thursday night December 2 on Africamix with two special guests playing live on the show and sharing their musical experience. It all begins at 9pm pst on KALW

About Lucia Comnes Lucia Comnes is a singer and violinist who interprets songs from many traditions, an aspiring songwriter, and an artistic director who has co-produced 3 albums and a myriad of musical collaborations in the Bay Area and internationally. A San Francisco native with a rich background in performance, travel and ethnomusicology, she started out her career as a vocalist with Kitka, the Oakland-based women's acappella vocal ensemble specializing in Balkan/Eastern European folk music.

About Karamo Susso Karamo Susso is an international kora star. Growing up in a griot compound in Mali, he started playing kora as a tiny child, and was performing for large crowds before he was even big enough to hold the instrument up by himself. Fully immersed in the tradition, he learned from world-renowned players like his uncle Ballake Sissoko and Toumani Diabate. He studied and taught kora at the Institute Nationale des Arts in Bamako, Mali.

Now and then there are extraordinary people who make an impact in our lives with their exceptional talents. This happens in all professions and in the music world we’ve had many who left us a legacy with their music which lingers for ever. The Caribbean nations of Guadeloupe/Martinique and Montserrat lost 2 of their greatest artists last month. Montserrat calypsonian and King of soca style Arrow the hit maker of the classic dancefloor blockbuster “Hot Hot Hot” and Guadeloupe’s Patrick St Eloi singer and a core member of the super group Kassav and maestro of the Zouk love style. On this edition of the show, this segment was a tribute to theses two giants of Caribbean music. Alphonsus Cassell a.k.a. Arrow, and Patrick St Eloi a.k.a. P.S.E . I had intended to begin this set with Arrow's original song 'hot hot hot', unfortunately i couldn't locate my copy. This is a remix cover of the song by a musician from Martinique.

Playlist for 09.16.2010—Pamela

Please donate to KALW during Africa Mix tonight. When you donate at the $90 level or more, you will receive as my hand-picked thank you gift, Joan Soriano's El Duque de la Bachata, a superb release that includes a music CD as well as an intimate documentary on DVD about this relative newcomer on the Dominican Bachata scene. Joan represents the new generation of bachateros, and his talent is awaiting worldwide recognition.

Genuine thanks to iASO Records for donating this title on behalf of the KALW Fall Membership Drive.

I hope you will show your support for KALW radio -- and for Africa Mix -- during the Membership Drive. No donation is too small, but remember it's tax-deductible and shows the station that you value what we bring you.

If you have already made your donation, thanks so much!

There is a sultry African jazz singer, who was brought to my attention by our own bay area folk/jazz singer and songwriter Meklit Hadero. Her name is Somi she was Born in Illinois to immigrant parents from Rwanda and Uganda, Often compared to the likes of Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn, Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone, and Cesaria Evora, Somi’s vocal beauty has been also compared to that of Dianne Reeves. She is quickly climbing the world music chart on Billboard magazine. , Somi’s talents have been called upon for collaborations and live performances alongside Bobby McFerrin, Baaba Maal, John Legend, Cassandra Wilson, Mos Def, Paul Simon and Nicholas Payton. While Somi and her band continue to perform at venues in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, the globetrotting chanteuse says, “At the end of the day, I still know who I am and where home is before, during, and after the rain—it’s in the music.”
