Please donate to KALW during Africa Mix tonight. When you donate at the $90 level or more, you will receive as my hand-picked thank you gift, Joan Soriano's El Duque de la Bachata, a superb release that includes a music CD as well as an intimate documentary on DVD about this relative newcomer on the Dominican Bachata scene. Joan represents the new generation of bachateros, and his talent is awaiting worldwide recognition.= = = Set 1: about 9:04 pm
Genuine thanks to iASO Records for donating this title on behalf of the KALW Fall Membership Drive.
I hope you will show your support for KALW radio -- and for Africa Mix -- during the Membership Drive. No donation is too small, but remember it's tax-deductible and shows the station that you value what we bring you.
If you have already made your donation, thanks so much!

There is a sultry African jazz singer, who was brought to my attention by our own bay area folk/jazz singer and songwriter Meklit Hadero. Her name is Somi she was Born in Illinois to immigrant parents from Rwanda and Uganda, Often compared to the likes of Miriam Makeba, Sarah Vaughn, Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone, and Cesaria Evora, Somi’s vocal beauty has been also compared to that of Dianne Reeves. She is quickly climbing the world music chart on Billboard magazine. , Somi’s talents have been called upon for collaborations and live performances alongside Bobby McFerrin, Baaba Maal, John Legend, Cassandra Wilson, Mos Def, Paul Simon and Nicholas Payton. While Somi and her band continue to perform at venues in Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, the globetrotting chanteuse says, “At the end of the day, I still know who I am and where home is before, during, and after the rain—it’s in the music.”
