Playlist for 12.25.2008—Emmanuel Nado

Each week on Africa Mix we play a variety of African music emanating from all the corners of the African continent—each region with a variety of rhythms and distinct dance styles. As we witness today, a myriad of music and dance styles have sprung from around the African countries. On tonight’s program, I am featuring 6 different styles separately: Afrobeat, Mbaqanga, Kwaito, Rumba, Mbalax and Mandingue music.
—Emmanuel Nado

COUNTRY
Nigeria

Afrobeat is a blend of American jazz, funk and Nigeria beat. This style was created by Africa’s most outspoken artist, the late Fela Kuti in the early 70s. Many other African artists have since embraced this style as their own.

Rumba is the style which originated in Central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The style was and still is the preferred dance style of the older generation because of its slow beat. The style is close to the Cuban son montuno.

Mandingue music is the name given to the traditional music of countries like Guinee, Gambia, Mali and part of Senegal. It is more indigenous to Mali than any of the other countries aforementioned.. It is a dinstinct sound easily recognized because of the powerful vocals of the singers who are called griots or praise singers, and the use of traditional instruments such as the kora ( a type of African harp), the balafon (a wooden-keyed xylophone) the tamana (talking drum) and the n’goni (a small guitar-like instrument). All these are used along with electric guitars, keyboard and drum kits giving Malien music its modern feel.

Tribute to Mama Africa & Playlist for 11.13.2008—Nado

A tribute to Mama Africa
Miriam Makeba, who brought African music to the world years before world music became fashionable, died this past weekend in Italy, where she was performing in solidarity for 6 Ghanaen immigrants who were shot killed in a small town near the southern city of Naples.

Miriam Makeba collapsed on stage after singing one of her most famous hits, "Pata Pata". Affectionately called "Mama Africa", she embodied the courage and strength of the African woman who is the pillar of her family. Her music was intertwined with her life—she told her story and the story of where she came from, South Africa. She was an inspiration to all Africans, singers and not singers, we all had this spiritual connection with her. She was the first woman role model for Africans, she’ll remain the most vital inspiring performer full of zest and pure love of life. Her story is that of hope and triumph over adversity. She was truly Mama Africa.

Passings: Miriam Makeba has died

From BBC news:
November 10, 2008

South African singing legend Miriam Makeba has died aged 76, after being taken ill in Italy. She had just taken part in a concert near the southern town of Caserta and died of a heart attack.

Makeba, known as "Mama Africa", spent more than 30 years in exile after lending her support to the anti-apartheid struggle. She appeared on Paul Simon's Graceland tour in 1987 and in 1992 had a leading role in the film Sarafina!

Makeba, was born in Johannesburg on 4 March 1932 and was a leading symbol in the struggle against apartheid.

Her singing career started in the 1950s as she mixed jazz with traditional South African songs. She came to international attention in 1959 during a tour of the United States with South African group the Manhattan Brothers.

She was forced into exile soon after when her passport was revoked after starring in an anti-apartheid documentary and did not return to her native country until after Nelson Mandela was released from prison in 1990.

Makeba was the first black African woman to win a Grammy Award, which she shared with Harry Belafonte in 1965.

Charlie Gillett, who presents the BBC World of Music programme, says there is nobody to compare to her, as she was popular in West Africa - after living in exile in Guinea - and East Africa for recording a version of the Swahili song Malaika, as well as her home in South Africa.

She was African music's first world star blending different styles long before the phrase "world music" was coined.

After her divorce from fellow South African musician Hugh Masekela she married American civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael.

It was while living in exile in the US that she released her most famous songs, Pata Pata and the Click Song.

"You sing about those things that surround you," she said. "Our surrounding has always been that of suffering from apartheid and the racism that exists in our country. So our music has to be affected by all that."

It was because of this dedication to her home continent that Miriam Makeba became known as Mama Africa.

Playlist for 10.02.2008—Emmanuel Nado

On tonight’s show I featured the music most Africans grew up with in the early years of freedom from colonization. In the late 50s and through the 60s, as we Africans south of the Sahara were enjoying the scent of freedom, we danced to the beat of a music style called Congolese Rumba. It sounded like the Cuban son for those of you familiar with afro-Cuban music. We simply called it ‘Congo Music’. The style developed in the two Congos, Congo Kinshasa (formerly Zaire, now D.R. Congo) and Congo Brazzaville the later was a former French colony and the other a former Belgium colony. Both countries are a 30-minute ferry ride across the Congo River from each other.

The genre incorporated traditional African rhythms, afro Spanish music from the Caribbean and a pinch of French speaking Europeans. Congolese rumba was the foundation of what we know today as soukous, Congolese guitar dance style, which continued to influence the rest of the African continent.

Some of the early pioneers were Orchestres Africa Jazz, OK Jazz, Ryco Jazz, Elegance Jazz, Les Bantous de la Capitale, Les Conbantous, Empire Bakuba, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Kabasele, Franco, Dr. Nico, and Manu Dibango, to name just a few.

Side note: Notice how many of these orchestras's names end with the word "Jazz"? This is because— even though the style had Afro-Cuban influences—its birth was to African music what jazz was to the music of America. These bands’ brass sections were very much influenced by American jazz.
