Miriam Makeba, who brought African music to the world years before world music became fashionable, died this past weekend in Italy, where she was performing in solidarity for 6 Ghanaen immigrants who were shot killed in a small town near the southern city of Naples.
Miriam Makeba collapsed on stage after singing one of her most famous hits, "Pata Pata". Affectionately called "Mama Africa", she embodied the courage and strength of the African woman who is the pillar of her family. Her music was intertwined with her life—she told her story and the story of where she came from, South Africa. She was an inspiration to all Africans, singers and not singers, we all had this spiritual connection with her. She was the first woman role model for Africans, she’ll remain the most vital inspiring performer full of zest and pure love of life. Her story is that of hope and triumph over adversity. She was truly Mama Africa.
