Top Ten Releases and Best of 2009—Pamela

TOP TEN RELEASES
There were some outstanding releases to chase away the gloom of 2009. In alphabetical order, my favorites were:
BEST MOVIE of 2009
I Bring What I Love
Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's documentary about a pivotal period in the life of Youssou N'Dour. Excellent access to the personal history of this usually very private superstar.

BEST LIVE PERFORMANCE of 2009
King Sunny Adé at the Independent, San Francisco
This was one of the most fun evenings of the year. Nigerian living legend—the "Minister of Enjoyment"— was in fine form on the intimate stage of the Independent. A night of nonstop dancing with a crowd who was totally into it.

BEST LOCAL DISCOVERY of 2009
Radio Africa & Kitchen
Chef Eskender Aseged's cuisine is sensitively composed of nourishing ingredients and his zest for life.

BEST BRUSH WITH GREATNESS of 2009
Interview with Baaba Maal at Press Here Productions in New York, October 16, 2009. This one-on-one interview will air in February 2010 on Africa Mix at KALW 91.7 FM in anticipation of Baaba's upcoming tour—presumably performing songs from his acclaimed release, Television. See you at the show! Tuesday, April 20, 2010, CalPerformances at Zellerbach Hall on the UC Berkeley campus.

In-studio conversation with Ivoirean musician Soum Bill, "The Elephant of Abidjan," and Emmanuel Nado.

Soum Bill's mother and father are from two separate ethnic groups, which helped shape his views on respect and tolerance. He grew up in the working-class districts of Abidjan and Treichville, where his interest in music developed partly shaped by his grandmother, who was a musician. He started as a percussionist in several groups of the "easy ambience" style, a music animation performed by young Ivoireans featuring tam-tam and bells for occasions such as funerals, group journeys and football/soccer games.

Soumahoro Ben Mamadou changed his name to Soum Bill when he joined the group Mini Choc in 1989. Soon he became part of the Zouglou movement, named after a type of music based on the traditional rhythm and dance of Youfaseur. After leaving Mini Choc, Soum Bill created the band Les Garagistes, singing lead vocals. His latest group are Les Salopards.

Playlist for 10.29.2009, also Amandio Cabral and Raquel Bitton visit—Emmanuel Nado

Cape Verdean music legend Amandio Cabral was guest this evening on Africa Mix. Mr. Cabral is one of the most revered Morna composers in his country. Cape Verde is located some 600 km off the coast of Senegal in West Africa. During the second half of the 20th century, constant catastrophic droughts brought a significant hardship, and many of its people emigrated around the world. As a result of this mass exodus, there are more Cape Verdeans living abroad than in Cape Verde. It is this history of bittersweet separation and longing that has painted most of Cape Verde’s music culture. Amandio Cabral is the composer and lyricist of the most famous morna, "Sodade," sung by Cesaria Evora. Cabral is the composer and singer who first took Cape Verde music to Europe and beyond. By bringing the morna and other Cape Verdean music to worldwide audiences, he paved the way for Cesaria Evora, and many Cape Verdean musicians who follow him and sing his songs today. Amandio was accompanied by French Jazz singer Raquel Bitton.

A special tribute to the late Luambo Makiadi "Franco"
Hailed as Africa’s greatest musician, sorcerer of the guitar.

For more than 30 years he had been at the very core of the most popular and influential pan-African music. No one else sounded like him, no one else played the guitar like him.

His playing style defined Africa’s popular music from all corners of the continent, making an extraordinary impact on generations of African singers and musicians through which his music and his style of composition lives on.

It’s Franco, and the band must be his T.P.O K Jazz (Very Powerful OK Jazz}

Nado presents Rebeca Mauleón

Based in San Francisco, pianist, vocalist, bandleader, musical director, composer, arranger, producer, lecturer, author and journalist, Rebeca Mauleon has dedicated much of her life and 30-years music career to the study of Afro-Caribbean music, and now is arguably one of the United States’ leading authorities on the subject. In that pursuit, she developed a truly multifaceted career in which she shares her knowledge in numerous ways.

She follows a long-standing tradition of Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz performers. She has recorded and performed with an array of Grammy-winning legends including Tito Puente, Carlos Santana,
Israel “Cachao” Lopez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Carlos Patato, Steve Winwood, Joe Henderson and Mickey Hart.

Rebeca will be my guest on Africa Mix, Thursday, October 1 at 9:00PM. Tune into the conversation with this multifaceted prolific artist.
